Kittitian Carnival
This is a great track off a double vinyl album from the mid '70s called The Real Thing. As far as I know this album has never been released on CD and copies have changed hands on eBay for $120. I heard this track on the Helen Mayhew program Dinner Jazz on the old JazzFM in London several years ago and had been looking for it ever since. I managed to get a copy of the album a couple of months ago (early 2009) and have to say I was disappointed with the rest of the album. Kittitian Carnival is a jazz/funk/calypso number and is basically a 16-bar blues. The album features Houston Person but he only plays 4 choruses after the 2 chorus intro finishing off with a hackneyed riff which nearly causes the trumpet player who follows him to crack up! There are various solos from Marcus Belgrave (tp), Wild Bill Moore (ts), Don Townes (tp), Eli Fountain (as), Robert Lowe (g) before Sonny Phillips takes an 8 chorus solo on Hammond Organ. This is the solo which sells the whole track to me but the drummer Hank Brown drives it all along with a pulsing beat. In his intro, Houston names the members of the aggregation and finishes up by saying "Get it on!" - and they do. Playing time 7:33
